AP reports a sniper shot fatally injuring Johnnie Mae Chappell, 36, as she walked near Jacksonville. Three men were injured by public safety activity during the incident. two white and one Black man were struck but not seriously hurt. The events occurred amid a Black youth parade and rising racial tensions.
President Johnson warned at a labor convention that a general war is impossible in the nuclear era and urged nations to pursue reasoned agreements. He cited Cuba and the Panama Canal dispute as examples and expressed hope for a resolution in Cyprus and Vietnam through restraint and diplomacy.
Officials report traffic halted by three unidentified citizens who guided vehicles at the Amherst Street intersection just inside the city limits. Police praised the trio for aiding motorists before officers could thank them.
A Winchester Corporation Court grand jury returned indictments against nine people for crimes from autos to burglary to armed robbery. Indicted for three breakings and enterings with intent to commit larceny were Robert Lee Yancey Ralph Wayne Jenkins and William Roger Elder, linked to city burglaries Jan 28 through Jan 31. Elder pleaded not guilty to one charge. the case was later not pressed. Elder pleaded guilty along with Yancey and Jenkins to related indictments.
A mentally deranged 19 year old Norikazu Otani scaled a six foot wall at the U S Embassy and stabbed Ambassador Edwin O Reischauer in the thigh as he emerged. Reischauer underwent surgery and is reported in good shape. Otani was captured at once and said to have no clear motive.
The Winchester Evening Star removed its 17 year old 16 page Duplex rotary press from The Star building and sold it to Noblesville Indiana. The Star switches to a 40 page Goss off set press capable of four color reproduction. Jack F. Davis notes the shift toward offset printing and expects future daily papers to move from traditional presses. The changeover requires training and may cause occasional late press times as staff adapt.
Washington. The Bobby Baker investigation moves forward as Democrats on the Senate Rules Committee bar GOP calls for key witnesses including Walter Jenkins and Matt McCloskey. An accountant, Milton Hauft, retracts a forgery accusation over minor discrepancies in Baker’s 1961 tax refund.
In Geneva the Greek Turkish and British governments approved former Finnish diplomat Sakari Tuomioja as a potential Cyprus mediator. Thant met with Tuomioja after discussions with Greek Turkish Cypriot leaders to secure acceptance. Meanwhile, seven Greek and two Turkish hostages in LouroujinA were freed after negotiations, with no injuries reported.
Hollywood AP reports Peter Lorre died at 59 from a stroke. The Hungarian actor was found beside his bed Monday as a cleaner entered his apartment. Lorre, famed for psycopathic villain roles since 1927, had suffered high blood pressure and a 1959 scare but remained a lively, gregarious figure off screen.
In New Iberia Louisiana a father George Mouton was convicted for slugging John Mc Graw principal of New Iberia High School after his son Glenn 15 was sent home for a haircut deemed too long. Mouton plans appeals to the State District Court and to sympathetic parents.
A two seater Vietnamese air force fighter was shot down south of Saigon by rockets from Communist guerrillas, killing a U S Air Force officer and a Vietnamese crew member aboard.
Hodgson and Brown will be closed until Thursday morning due to a death in the family.
General Douglas MacArthur, 84, in serious condition after an emergency Monday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is conscious, in the recovery room, with life support equipment nearby. doctors report progress but remain cautious. An esophageal bleed prompted the six hour operation. a ruptured vein in the esophagus and splenectomy were involved in the emergency care.
