Lt Governor L Preston Collins will speak at the Apple Blossom Festival mass meeting in Sarah Zane Hall on Friday night March 28 at 8 p m. The event in Winchester will draw delegates from about forty organizations and hundreds of local residents.

County deputies pursue two transient men after they pried open a door and looted Stonewall High School over the weekend. Janitor Stan Davis startled them yesterday afternoon as they fled in a northerly direction. Police describe both white men aged 20 to 30, one in light brown pants and a two tone brown sweater, the other in dark pants and a dark coat possibly leather. They may have entered Saturday night and left after Davis alarmed the building. Cash taken was under $2, with several lockers and a steel cabinet damaged.

Virginia Military Institute in Lexington announces the donation of three letters written by General Stonewall Jackson in 1862. The bulk are personal notes offering prayers and reveal Jackson's religious conviction. One letter dated February 11, 1862, discusses his protest and resignation from field service. The letters join other Jackson mementoes in the VMI museum.
The week ends with 17 fatalities in Virginia and multiple injuries from several crashes. Notable deaths include H Stephen Smith 24 and William H Willis 22 in Warrenton, and Katherine W Smith who died later. Ellen Moore transferred to UVA hospital in serious condition. A fire of undetermined origin swept the upper decks of the 22 424 ton British liner Monarch of Bermuda while in drydock at Hebburn on Tyne. Discovered shortly after 3 am the blaze, fanned by strong winds, burned for over eight hours before it was controlled. Initial loss estimate not available.
