In The Hague two gunmen killed British Ambassador Sir Richard Sykes and his Dutch valet during morning rush hour. Sykes, 57, a security expert, and the 19 year old valet died at a hospital. Police offered no motive.
In Sanandaj an uneasy truce held as Ayatollah Teleghani and interior minister Javadi urged the Kurdish rebels to list demands. Heavy fighting subsided, with reports of over 100 to 200 dead, many civilians, as troops besieged the garrison near the ambassador’s residence.
Frederick County fruit growers secured a partial win when the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the Labor Department’s appeal to overturn a lower court order allowing Jamaican workers for last season’s apple harvest. The case goes back to U S District Court in Virginia to decide if a permanent injunction is warranted before next harvest.

Washington AP Carter administration backs away from setting an overall profit target after a 26.4 percent fourth quarter rise in 1978 corporate profits, citing concern it would weaken wage and price guideline support. Spokesman Jody Powell says government will not dictate earnings levels to firms. Meany urges excess profits be taxed to curb prices and protect workers' living standards.
