Cities Seek Double Share Of Federal Highway Funds
The United States Conference of Mayors urged Congress to double the usual city share of federal highway funds to relieve traffic chaos. Maj. Gen. Fleming said $673 million allocated since the war is a small fraction of needs and urged rapid traffic plans tied to federal aid. The conference considered earmarking at least 50 percent of next year's $450 million highway-aid for cities, up from 25 percent now, risking less for intercity and rural routes.

Russians Promise No Restriction On Berlin Marks
Soviet commandant Col. Alexander Jelisarov says Western ban on Russian currency in the eastern zone will not trigger restrictions on east mark use by western Berliners. Berliners may still exchange west marks for east marks for ration stores and payments to farmers, avoiding mass confiscation of balances. The move is seen as a concession to avoid a broader split in Berlin while Western and Soviet authorities confer on financial measures.
