Stockton Heth Jr was shot in the Blacksburg Virginia Polytechnic Institute home of Prof Charles E Vawter. Gossip among faculty and townspeople followed the frequent visits to the Vawter household by Heth and Mrs Vawter. The Richmond Evening Journal reports Prof Vawter found his wife missing and retrieved a revolver. The case remains under investigation.
The National Defense Magazine for January 1917 advocates universal military training to prepare citizens for defense. Creed sections argue for federal legislation, training of men aged eighteen to twenty one, equality of duty across social classes, and the aim of creating trained citizen soldiers to strengthen the nation. Paris dispatch reports French forces within five miles of Saint Quentin shelling the German railway depot while aviators recount fires visible fifty miles back. German positions northeast of Soissons yielded. fighting spans nearly 100 miles as Anglo French troops pursue retreating forces. French advance includes about 20 more villages with Ham and Chauny reached. St Quentin could fall by nightfall.

General Pershing praises military instruction as essential for lawful citizenship and obedience. A school of instruction opens at the Armory on North Market Street with weekly Thursday meetings at 8 p m. All young men urged to join.
The Hagerstown Railway Company car barn on Howard Street and Summit Avenue burned early this morning. Albert Rowe reported the fire at 1 30, and efforts to fight it with a extinguisher failed as flames spread. Several cars were moved to safety. others were wrecked. Insurance covers the loss estimated at 75000 dollars.
The Street Committee has recommended purchasing a Foote concrete mixing machine. The City Manager will buy it to have on hand for the spring reopening to resume laying concrete walks. They seek tax and water concessions, not a free site, for a wooden articles manufacturer. The plant would employ at least 90 workers, half laborers and half skilled mechanics, with a site already arranged.
