Mrs. Eula Miller testified that she saw her son-in-law Emory Lee Shifflett shoot Courtney Loring Ashwood point-blank in her living room around 7 p.m. last August 26. Shifflett, 38, faces murder charges for the death of 55-year-old painter Ashwood.
South Vietnamese forces reported 64 Viet Cong killed and 16 captured in three actions in the northern 1st Army Corps area. The most successful fight near Da Nang left 28 Viet Cong dead, with captures and weapon seizures. Additional combats in Quang Tri and Quang Ngai provinces yielded further Viet Cong dead and captures, with no government losses. Nearby Be River operations and airlifted forces aided advances against guerrillas.
Snowfall from Patrick's Day, totaling 26 inches for winter, closed county schools early then eased. Two injuries reported with over $2,000 in damage across Winchester and Frederick County. Frederick and Clarke schools reopened. elementary schools and James Wood High went 1 pm closures. Police reported several wrecks on Rt 7, Rt 50 and Rt 522 as roads remained slick.
Yesterday in Paper Mill Road area Claude Bennington helped by a stranger who loaned a penknife to fix a filter and left. Bennington wants the knife returned and asks the caller to contact him at 662-3526. Also notes on local sightings and festival committee meeting.
The State Highway Commission approved a revised western by-pass line around Winchester. The route shifts west of the prior proposal, with detailed surveys and design to follow, prioritizing the Rt. 50 segment northward.
In Montgomery Alabama federal court sanctions a 50 mile march from Selma to Montgomery to protest racial segregation. King hails court order requiring state police protect demonstrators and urges governor Wallace to host a peaceful delegation arriving in Montgomery. Also, 36 white ministers arrested in Selma for parading without a permit. Johnson sends voting rights bill to Congress.
A chicken house and 6000 baby chicks were destroyed yesterday at 1 p.m. on Route 259. Estimated loss was about $10,000. The two story concrete block building belonged to S. Preston Henshaw of Highview. It had automatic ventilation and was possibly uninsured. Charles Davis of Yellow Spring Mill provided the loss estimate.
Soviet cosmonaut Lt Col Alexei Leonov left the Voskhod 2 capsule for 10 minutes in outer space while attached by a lifeline and performed independent experiments as Col Pavel Belyayev remained inside. Televised footage showed Earth and space, as Tass reported a successful first orbit and return to the ship.
William L. Brannon of Middletown was found guilty by a 12 member jury on two arson counts, with a seven year sentence set to run in the penitentiary pending a motion to set aside the verdict. Sentencing was deferred to April 7 for argument on the motion.
Soviet Tass reports Lt. Col. Alexei Leonov completed a spacewalk during Voskhod 2 mission 90 minutes after launch. U S Gemini program aims for a maneuverable craft, long space endurance, and docking. Officials say the United States lags behind by years in manned spaceflight.
The Richmond AP bulletin notes partial clearing in Virginia as a frontal zone along the Appalachians advances behind a large low pressure center pulling away toward Canada.
