Iranians halt Hoveida trial as new rules are drafted
Ayatollah Khomeini ordered the Islamic court to suspend proceedings against former Prime Minister Amir Abbas Hoveida until fresh rules for revolutionary tribunals are established. Bazargan, protesting what he called inhuman and irreligious trials, pressed the issue during consultations in Qom with Khomeini. The trial, opened in a Tehran makeshift courtroom, had charged Hoveida with spying for the United States, smuggling heroin, revolting against Iran, and corrupt practices, with the death penalty sought by the prosecutor.
