Paris reports gold hits a record 44.36 per ounce as France urges the six Common Market nations to act in a coordinated response. Foreign Minister Maurice Couve de Murville calls for agreement and common policy ahead of an international conference.
The cargo ship African Star caught fire after a collision with two oil barges on the lower Mississippi River near Pointe a la Hache Louisiana. Coast Guard reports 11 dead and at least 22 injured among 59 aboard as eyewitnesses describe crew leaping into the river and flames reaching 100 feet. Blazing oil spread across the water as the vessel grounded on the west bank.
President Johnson told a blue ribbon business gathering that the aim is to win the Vietnam conflict and pursue talks on cutting the budget to fund a proposed income surtax. He indicated no large troop surge, while congressional doubt and a possible $9 billion tax-increase plan loom. Police reported windshield break-ins on several Loudoun Street vehicles and a separate breaking and entering at Snapp's Foundry.

Rev. Virgil A. Moyer Jr. of Roanoke will become pastor of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester starting July 16. He has led Virginia Synod staff since 1959 and is a Roanoke College and Luther Theological Southern Seminary graduate.

Paul Soyars, 46, of Mountain View Subdivision, is charged with murder after a late night fight in the Soyars apartment left 59 year old David Hudson Frazier dead. Frazier, uncle of Mrs. Soyars, died at the scene and his body was moved to the state medical examiner in Richmond for autopsy. Funeral services are planned for Monday in Huntly with burial in Willis Chapel Cemetery.

He aims to contest the California Oregon Nebraska primaries and urges broad support for McCarthy in Wisconsin Pennsylvania and Massachusetts while stressing no personal rancor toward Johnson.
Philip Blaiberg, the world’s second heart transplant patient, walks out of Groote Schuur Hospital with Dr. Christiaan Barnard. Blaiberg says he is very well and ready to go home as Barnard plans future transplant steps and awaits new patients.
