Riots in Watts Leave 2 Dead and 26 Hurt

In Watts six hundred rioters rampaged for six hours, killing a truck driver and a teenager, injuring 26 others. Police sealed a 36 block area and fought mobs while Gov. Brown, avoiding the National Guard, said the situation was under control.

Weekend Rain Outlook Pressures Drought Concerns

The 25th Infantry Division fought a fiercer clash in Darlac, killing 33 Viet Cong, while three U.S. helicopters were shot down and crews rescued. An Air Force Phantom jet was reported missing south of Dien Bien Phu as air and naval strikes raided targets in the North and the South. Political turmoil continued with anti government protests after Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chanh Thi’s ouster, affecting Hue and other provincial capitals amid calls for national elections.
