Early Civil War Engines Haul From Martinsburg to Winchester
In 1861 CORN Tewskson then known as Stonewall led a brigade north of Martinsburg and seized over 50 Baltimore and Ohio locomotives and many freight cars. Most were burned or destroyed to hinder removal, but 20 engines were paraded through Winchester drawn by 32 horses each. Col. Thomas S. Sharp reportedly proposed broad tires on the wheels enabling the strange salvage. The B and O later reclaimed all engines, and Sharp gained admiration from railroad officials who offered him transportation master duties.
