Aviation experts opened a formal inquiry into a Tudor four engine airliner crash near Pardee, Wales, that killed 78 passengers and five crew with only three survivors. Victims included many coal miners returning home after a rugby victory over Ireland.
Prime Minister Joseph Stalin led millions of Russians to vote for a single slate in the Supreme Soviet election. Voters cast ballots across the vast nation, with 671 candidates for the Council of the Union and 631 for the Council of Nationalities, all unopposed.

Funeral services set for 4 p.m. at H D Oliver Funeral Apartments with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Born Detroit February 22 1888 he moved south in 1900 and graduated from Duke University in 1911.

One car of a Baltimore and Ohio fast freight train derailed near Martinsburg causing little damage but blocking main tracks for nearly three hours. Seven fast passenger trains including the Capital and National Limiteds, the Columbian, the Ambassador, the Diplomat, the Cincinnatian and the Metropolitan Special were delayed until the car could be cleared.
