The Virginia Volunteers numbering 3250 soldiers and 225 officers could be mobilized within 24 hours at any state point if the President calls on Governor Stuart for troops. Adjutant-General Sale said 225 officers and 2,250 soldiers could form forty infantry companies, four artillery batteries, a signal corps, a field hospital, and seven hospital detachments. Virginia has no cavalry or engineers and troops would obey presidential orders, foreign or domestic.

Mrs Josephthal Dies Suddenly in Warreton Virginia
Mrs. Sidney L. Josephthal formerly Miss Mary L. Cherbonnier of Maryland and New York died at Waverly her home in Warreton early Saturday morning. She was 27 and died of a heart attack. Survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Cherbonnier several sisters her husband and two children. A noted horsewoman and equestrienne she rode in Virginia Maryland and New York and appeared at Berryville and other shows.

Death of Charles Chase George Miller in Villa raid
The body of Charles Chase George Miller, brother of G C Miller and Minnie A Miller of Winchester, killed during Villa raid in Columbus, N M, is en route to Winchester for burial. He was shot defending his drug store as bandits looted the street during the 1916 raid. a wounded woman and child were seen nearby. Clarence Rogers, Miller’s chief prescription clerk, reports on Miller’s death and the store’s escape from fire.

Guard Is Coming For Walter Banks
A Virginia penitentiary guard is due in Winchester this week to escort Walter Banks, colored, who received a five year term in Richmond for the shooting and killing of Peter Myers. Banks was convicted in Frederick County Circuit Court in February. a court order copy was sent to the prison superintendent. Myers was shot during a fight near Nellie Kemp’s Middletown home last August. Banks claimed self defense. the five year verdict was described as a jury compromise.
