Mrs. Rachel Rinker aged near Wadesville Clarke county died at 2 this morning from pneumonia. Her husband J H Rinker Lived ill nearby. They would have marked their sixty first anniversary this May. Five daughters survive and funeral at 10 30 Tuesday with interment at Mount Hebron Winchester. Mrs Rinker long a Presbyterian member.
Residents of Winchester and Frederick county cannot recover snow damage from insurers. Insurance agents say policy holders expecting payouts will be disappointed as no policy includes coverage for losses caused by snow.
Winchester Commissioner of the Revenue J. L. Maphis has received his 1917 assessment blanks and will start assessing all personal property in the city immediately, with work beginning at once.

In Frederick County 626.14 was collected. over half of the state’s counties reported no inheritance tax.

Governor Hiram W. Johnson plans to resign from the United States Senate next month to retain the California governorship. He is likely to name Chester Howell of Fresno as his successor, while a public statement to Californians is expected soon.

Russian eastward advance and British successes near Baghdad threaten a large Turkish army. The Turkish force in Persia is retreating before the Russian advance and showing signs of demoralization. They are falling back on Day Tetaly and risk being cut off from the main Turkish force.
Carl Thomas Massie 19, son of local Policeman Massie, died at his father's home near the Valley turnpike after a two week illness. He had been employed by a Cleveland automobile firm before returning to Winchester last fall. Survived by father, step-mother, two sisters Ivah Flegle and Hilda Massie, and half-brother John M. Massie Jr. Funeral Monday at two from the family residence with interment at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Elizabeth Horsey purchased a handsome residence near Harris addition on the Berryville pike from Lillie Lee Bunce.
H. B. Blanchard a special agent for Life Insurance Company of Virginia has arrived in town and plans to open an office in Winchester. He was formerly with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of New York for years and regarded as successful in the business.
A large wagon shed on A. M. Keckley’s farm near Rosenberger collapsed under heavy snow several days ago. Workmen remove wreckage and snow. The shed held about a ton of hay and farming implements.
