New Hampshire voters cast the first primary ballots of 1972 in Manchester amid a high stakes contest for the Democratic nomination. Senator Edmund S Muskie campaigned as a frontrunner from nearby Maine and urged a large turnout as rival charges surfaced in the race.
A new 30,000 square foot three story Medical Arts Building is planned to replace the destroyed Surgical Clinic. The facility will house 25 doctors with two elevators and full air conditioning, aiming to blend Williamsburg and contemporary styles. The project sits between Town Run and Wolfe Street facing Stewart Street.
Acting Attorney General Richard G. Kleindienst returns to a Senate Judiciary hearing amid questions over why the Justice Department dropped an antitrust suit against International Telephone and Telegraph. ITT director Felix Rohatyn and ex-Atty. Gen. John Mitchell also testified as the committee pursued the memo linking a GOP convention pledge to the suit decision. Dita Beard, ITT’s lobbyist, was subpoenaed to testify about the memo while her doctors offered conflicting assessments of her condition and readiness to talk.
In Virginia, a clash of committee schedules postponed final General Assembly approval of a new congressional reapportionment plan. The House sent the measure 84 to 9 to the Senate, but the Senate Privileges and Elections and Finance committees delayed action until Wednesday. The plan, praised for mathematical precision and near one man one vote standards, was expected to pass with little opposition.
The Frederick County landfill operator swore warrants charging Supervisor Dennis T. Cole and Leonard C. Ellis with trespassing on posted county property at the Frederick County dump. Warrants were written by Justice of the Peace Arthur M. Gooden Jr. and await authorization from Commonwealth's Attorney Lawrence Ambrogi before service.
The plan to form a six member cabinet to assist the governor stalled after a two hour Senate General Laws debate. Debaters from both sides called it perhaps the most important bill of the session as a three man sub committee studies the measure. Senate leaders indicated opposition may be cautious. The plan ties into a management study by a blue ribbon panel that cites potential net savings of 61 million annually and 12 million in one time savings with 18 million in avoidance costs. Del Roy Smith presented the bipartisan bill as chief patron.
Federal auditors report millions of Medicare dollars misspent due to inefficiencies and excess payments to doctors by insurers. Audits cover Blue Shield plans, Connecticut General Life, Aetna Life, Occidental Life, and others with duplicate or improper payments totaling several millions. Officials dispute some projections and say corrective steps have been taken, with continued scrutiny noted.
Municipal and town offices in Winchester Berryville Boyce Middletown Clarke and Frederick Counties see several filings as the May 2 election deadline nears. No new Winchester mayor or council candidates announced by noon, while Berryville and Middletown add a few names. Dems nominate six for Council with no independents.
