The fifth day of Apollo 9 depicts the lunar module undergoing maneuvers. The sequence shows separation from Apollo 9, retro rocket firing, stage separation, upper stage rejoining, and final jettisoning of the upper stage.
The House Ways and Means Committee rejected Nixon's plan to raise the debt ceiling to 365 billion with 17 billion extra borrowing power. The panel approved a 12 billion increase to next June 30, 1970, signaling a return to Congress early 1970 to argue for the economy plan.

Rescue workers said they were at least 24 hours from reaching William Jones, the miner trapped underground since Saturday. Jones, fed by water and light food, helped direct rescuers Thursday after a collapse of rock and mud in the lead zinc mine.
The Winchester Presbytery approved the organic union of the Reformed Church in America and the Presbyterian Church U.S. by a 73 to 6 vote. Four more affirmative votes are needed to reach merger approval, with so many presbyteries still to vote across 59 churches and 49 ministers in the region.
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird held all day talks in Vietnam with Ambassador Bunker and General Abrams on possible U S responses to continued Viet Cong rocket and mortar attacks on Saigon and major cities. Ky said retaliation including bombing North Vietnam was possible, while specifics remained undisclosed. Targets hit included Dong Tam, Da Nang, and Dalat as allied forces reported 217 enemy killed.
A child was found in the ruins of a home near Bien Hoa, about 15 miles north of Saigon, after U S air strikes supported South Vietnam Ranger units. The incident was photographed by AP Wirephoto.
The Soviet Foreign Ministry reports 31 troops killed and 14 wounded after a border clash with Chinese forces. About 330 Chinese troops allegedly opened fire at the wounded and bayonetted them. Protests erupted outside the Chinese embassy in Moscow and in Peking with mass demonstrations and violent incidents.
Apollo 9 pilots James McDivitt and Russell Schweickart detached the lunar module to chase the command ship in Earth orbit. They aimed to complete a vital docking rendezvous, with Air Force Col. David Scott aboard the command module as backup, as the LEM shed weight and prepared for a later linkup.
