A car carrying five sailors, all stationed at Norfolk, slammed into a disabled tractor-trailer on Interstate 95 near Fredericksburg early today. All five were killed and the state toll rose to 123 for 1966. Names were withheld pending relatives’ notifications.
Frederick County deputies investigated an attempted safe-cracking at Stonewall School. A tear gas bomb was set to deter pursuit, and Sheriff John Slater, recently released from hospital after a heart attack, led the inquiry. A cold week with weekend snow flurries and temperatures in the 20s is forecast.

Gas station owners Ken Clevenger and Wayne Crossen said $500 was stolen Thursday between noon and 12:45 p.m. A small cabin was broken into with money taken.
The Stonewall School at Clearbrook was broken into between 6 p.m. and 7 30 a.m. Entry was gained by breaking a south side window after failed door prying. Offices were ransacked and records scattered. A soft drink machine and ice cream freezer were opened, $5 in change taken, payroll checks $500 and about $4 in the safe. A tear gas bomb booby trap exploded during the safe attempt.

The Supreme Court upheld key sections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. It allowed Congress to suspend state literacy tests and to assign federal examiners to register voters in affected areas.
