Windstorm of March 1 1914 battered Winchester with hurricane force winds tearing down trees and damaging buildings. Property losses were estimated at 60000 to 100000 dollars with no fatalities reported. The storm uprooted trees at Mount Hebron Stonewall and National cemeteries and cut power, leaving streets dark.
A strong Martinsburg wind hurled two women across the street in a freak incident. Both were hospitalized for observation but not seriously injured. The Inter-Community Canoa is set to conclude Tuesday at Shenandoah College and Confer vy of Music with Archer and Gile performing folk songs. The Marlowe Twins will close Martinsburg’s season March 24 at 3 p.m. in Martinsburg High School. Copies of Wednesday's Evening Star will be available at the Star office tomorrow.
Whistling winds reached around 45 mph with peaks near 60 mph downing trees and damaging several autos. In the city two cars on S Washington St suffered more than 1000 dollars in damage when a large tree fell onto them near Cork and Braddock streets. Other vehicles were hit along Valley Road and Braddock area as storms rattled power and phone lines and a garage roof blew off a resident near Round Hill. Damages included an uninsured 500 dollar loss for Paul Barker and minor outages for Northern Virginia Power Co and Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co as crews cleared debris and restored service.

Singer Patsy Cline who died in a Piper Comanche crash near Camden Tennessee will be buried at Shenandoah Memorial Park Sunday. Funeral services are at 3 30 p m at Jones Funeral Home. She and three others from the Grand Ole Opry died in the hillside crash while returning to Nashville from Kansas City after a benefit performance.
State Police Sgt. F L Woolf said no new facts emerged in the February 25 double slayings of Waltrie Hoover and her mother E M Snow in Rt 522 The murders remain unsolved with no arrests and a fingerprint and two suspicious men still under review A $1000 reward had been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
The Army intelligence chief says the Soviets may store ammu nition vehicles and aircraft in thousands of caves in Cuba and block access for Cuban officials. Aerial photos show roads to caves and suggest underground storage of military equipment. The report discounts underground weapons while noting expanded, modern heavy gear in Cuba.
Conrad Hoover Post 21 American Legion marks the 44th anniversary of Legion activities with two special services this Thursday. The observance will honor the founding day March 15, 1919 in Paris and include a local post history presented by WWI members.
Dr. L. O. Fears, Frederick County health director, told the PTA Council that government must conserve the people’s health. He said the health department works to promote community well being and disease prevention. The PTA meeting was held last night.
Interstate dispute over harvesting ladybugs. Washington lawmakers seek to criminalize shipping Washington ladybugs while California suppliers claim to control a vast cross state market shipping 1.5 billion bugs annually at prices from two dollars per pint to eight dollars per gallon.
Judge Elliott Marshall orders Circuit Court proceedings moved to Winchester Corporation Courtroom starting March 18 to relieve docket congestion. The Winchester Frederick County Bar Association pressed the change citing inadequate facilities. An old 1899 agreement splits costs two thirds by the city and one third by the county while a courthouse expansion remains stalled.
Clarke County treasurer R C Carter Jr says the proposed tax rise is 25 cents per $100 of assessed value, not 50 cents. The rate would move to $2.90 from $2.65, matching seven year status. A public hearing is planned next month to discuss the levy to cover an estimated $72 432 county budget shortfall.
A 20 foot dam failed sending flood waters through Norwich business district. Five people died and one is missing as a boiler explosion followed the water surge at a cord-manufacturing plant. Roofs collapsed and power outages halted the Norwich Bulletin.

Also notes new furniture outfit and a meeting tonight at Friendship Fire Co. 8 p.m. with refreshments.
