Autopsy Ordered In Cadet's Death At Staunton Academy
Staunton Military Academy cadet Robert F. Tyus 18 was found dead in his barracks. A medical examiner ruled the death a likely suicide after Tyus tied a bathrobe cord around his neck. Tyus was described as an exemplary senior cadet.

Explosion From Collision Levels Navy Tanker Mission San Francisco
In New Castle Delaware a violent midships explosion ripped the Navy tanker Mission San Francisco after a collision with the freighter Etna II in the Delaware River. At least 10 crewmen aboard the tanker, including the captain and deck officers, were missing. 26 survived by boat or rescue craft. The Etna II crew of 23 was all accounted for. The tanker sank near Pea Patch Jetty, and rescuers faced a snow storm and widespread flames. The Mission San Francisco, a Military Sea Transportation Service civilian crewed ship under contract to haul oil for the Navy, had a 20 200 ton capacity and was empty and un fumigated at the time.
