The Star recalls a six inch snowfall thirty years ago that, with high winds, formed drifts and isolated hundreds of autos in Winchester. Two Route 50 bus drivers assisted stranded passengers by relaying to a service station for fuel. The piece recalls a harsher storm on February 7, 1895 with impassable rail lines and no snowplows.
The storm blanketed the region from Alabama to New England with winds gusting to 58 mph and up to 23 inches of snow. It closed schools, halted traffic, and knocked down power lines as Atlantic City's Steel Pier and Ventnor municipal pier suffered damage. Northern Virginia reported heavy snowfall with 22 to 23 inches in several counties.
Police logged four minor traffic wrecks in the area yesterday evening with no injuries. Incidents included a 3 p.m. hit on a parked car at 208 Parkway and a 5 p.m. left-turn collision at Cameron and Pall Mall. State Police noted damages of 450 on Rt. 11 north of Winchester, 400 on Rt. 522 north, and a 6 p.m. crash on Rt. 7 east with details unavailable.
Mrs. Grant B Welsh of Stephenson reported a night of lightning and heavy wind during a snowstorm with multiple awakenings after midnight by tapping on the telephone. A robin visited the Shaw family porch for crumbs at breakfast. Agene Campbell of Boyce saw a large flock of geese flying east over the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Snow halted all local postal deliveries for the first time. Postmaster Wilbur Johnston said highway trucks cannot reach town and corner boxes will hold mail until streets clear. He warned some rural routes on secondary roads may delay tomorrow’s deliveries while town windows closed at 1 PM.
Lincoln proposed to Congress the gradual compensated emancipation of border state slaves. The Monitor, the first Federal ironclad, departed New York on a naval mission.

A Virginia General Assembly conference committee was to be chosen to mediate on the Buck-Holland statewide branch banking bill. The Associated Press forecast for Virginia calls for strong winds with snow in the west and mixed rain and snow in the east this afternoon. Windy with snow changing to flurries tonight, low temperatures around 30 on the coast and in the 20s inland. Wednesday remains partly cloudy, windy and cold with mountain snow flurries.
