Eleven men from the Yamacraw were lost while rescuing the crew of the oil steamer Louisiana near Winters Quarter Light. The attempt followed calls for help as waves overwhelmed the small rescue boat. Four ships responded during the night. the tanker’s engine room continued flooding, risking total loss without swift aid.
The funeral for Mrs. A. E. Roberts will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. from her sister Mrs. James W. Sibert’s home at 300 North Kent Street. The Rev. Dr. J. H. Lacy will officiate with assistance from Rev. W. O. Talbert. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery. President Wilson says he lacks authority to arm merchant ships and counter the U boat threat without Congress. An extra session is needed to grant power, but Senate rules allow a minority to block action. He accuses 11 Senators of paralyzing government and plans to call the Senate to revise rules to avert disaster.
President Wilson may be able to order armament for American merchantmen despite the Senate filibuster. Advisors say he has authority under existing statutes and will consult State Secretary Lansing and Attorney General Gregory to issue orders to arm passenger and mail liners of the American line, enabling resumed sailings. London is puzzled by the Senate blockade of the armed ship bill.

The Bridgers Tabernacle, largest in Winchester with 2000 capacity, collapsed under the weight, damaging the rig and homes, while barns fell and cattle perished. Chin ton Br Chrismore’s planing mill on Smithfield Avenue was wrecked after workers braced roofs and shoveled snow overnight.
Bulgaria plans to sever diplomatic relations with the United States over perceptions of hostility toward Germany. Austria aims to maintain ties and monitor U S neutrality as it awaits Austria’s official position on Germany’s submarine program. Washington notes these rumors but finds no confirmation yet.
