U.S. Helicopters Drive S Vietnam Troops Deeper Into Laos

Hundreds of U S helicopters ferried South Vietnamese troops six miles deeper into Laos amid counterattacks. The advance opened a new front near Highway 9 with mixed contact reports. Casualties surged on all sides as airlifts continued from Khe Sanh and weekly tallies showed large Viet Cong and North Vietnamese losses.

American Casualties Highest in 6 Months

American combat deaths in Indochina rose to the highest weekly total in six months while South Vietnamese losses reached their peak since the 1968 Tet Offensive. The allied commands tallied 5,107 enemy dead the previous week, the strongest toll since the Cambodian campaign last May.

Reds Boycott Peace Talks in Vietnam Conference

In Paris the chief Communist delegates walked out of the weekly Vietnam peace talks over alleged U S acts of war. U S Ambassador Bruce accused them of stalling for preconditions while not addressing North Vietnamese forces in South Vietnam Cambodia and Laos. No return date was announced.

Washington United Transportation Union leaders say negotiators will resume talks at 4 p.m. after a brief breakdown in a nationwide railroad dispute. President Charles Luna dismissed any strike possibility and expressed cautious optimism about reaching a settlement.

March Storm Closes Area Schools and Halts Traffic

Capricious March delivered a winter storm that shut area schools, created hazardous driving conditions, and prompted officials to monitor for closures.
