In Baltimore a robbery suspect forced two officers to drive him in a prowl car. The bandit produced a revolver, ordered the officers to surrender their pistols, and a gunfight followed. The suspect was shot three times and died. one officer was wounded slightly.
The Blue Ridge Hunt will host a day of timber racing in Virginia with top riders and their own mounts competing for the Jo Memorial trophy in a four mile test. Also, a champion field hunter event will feature horses from several Virginia hunts. The public is invited.
Andrew Hunter Holmes and Peyton Smith son of Gen Smith of Hackwood John Park fought a duel across the Potomac near Shepherdstown after a challenge at Braddock Street recruiting HQ. Smith died soon after at Rang Entier Hotel in Shepherdstown after being taken there for care. Smith, a William and Mary graduate with high honors, died a close friend to Holmes.
Mrs Betty Kornfeld listened as two salesmen offered an accident insurance policy and a newspaper subscription. An oil burner exploded causing a blast that sent her and her grandmother from the home. After responders cleared debris she signed up for coverage.
President Truman urges Congress to grant power to seize struck mines while faulting both operators and miners for failing to bargain seriously. He avoids a clear scapegoat, echoes Roosevelt era tensions, and faces Republican critique that he capitulated to the miners. Senator Capehart accuses him of educating workers to disobey the law.
Police officials in the Capital face charges of corruption and a gambling tie up. Captain Anthony Richitt, moved from the downtown precinct, is accused of failure to perform duties and a disrespectful attitude. Richitt testified that gambler Emmitt Warring claimed the House committee’s interest came from “the boss.”
The Forty and Eight Volture 1078 sponsored a teen age dance at the George Washington Hotel crowded with city and county teens. Kenneth Windle and his orchestra played dreamy music while Becky Green 13 entertained with two songs. Chaperons and a teen age dance committee led by Diane Hunt planned a fourth event with dates to be announced.
Community fundraiser event at Round Hill Community Center to support the building fund. Supper features ham and chicken and runs from 5:00 PM, Wednesday, March 8, 1950, at a price of 1.00 per person.
Joseph Woodrow Walters, 506 S Loudoun St, was convicted in police court for driving while under the influence after his car side swiped a Reuss aerial truck at 2:50 pm. Judge John Rice fined Walters 100 dollars plus costs, suspended a 30 day jail term. The crash damaged the truck and nearby vehicle, with no injuries reported.
The Virginia Senate approved a bill raising teacher benefits from 420 to 600 dollars. The measure, placed on passage on first reading, advanced amid other bills on the calendar and constitutional readings were dispensed with. The House later passed a $599 million budget and advanced several bills including a World War I memorial building in Richmond and a retirement system for trial justices.
A large blaze last night at the Brickhouse Tavern in Newport News injured three and caused substantial damage. Fred Hunt and his wife, both from Rochester New York, suffered extensive burns. Fred Hunt is in critical condition with head and arm burns and a broken leg. Dr. Ray Dawson from Richmond and Mrs Lowry of Youngstown Ohio were among other injured. Flames rose from the tavern basement where upholstery work was taking place, two persons jumped to safety, and firemen could not identify them. The Hunts received plasma treatment and hospital staff called their burns exceptionally severe. The Brickhouse Tavern is a ten year old structure undergoing Williams burg restoration.
A yesterday report shows 28 percent of the $13 282 goal collected for the Red Cross Fund Drive. Chairman Carl Campbell praised $3 761 raised by 235 volunteers active since March 1. Special Gifts and Professional groups led progress with 86 and 78 percent of quotas.
The Gainesboro Gore Middle town and Stephens City FFA chapters held a banquet at Sarah Zane Hall drawing about 150 people. Warren Thompson led the event with Alfred Snapp Jr as president, Bruce Whitacre as advisor, and Benny Rogers hosting the introductions. Guests included Ag Instructor J L Givens, Fred Naegley of Winchester Milling, school superintendents, county agents, principals, and board members. Millard Singhass won the balloon bursting contest and Franklin Racey the grape eating prize as the Stephens City Ramblers performed.
The United States rejected Hungary s request to slash its Budapest legation staff calling the charges from the Vogeler trial preposterous and false. It kept consulates in New York and Cleveland closed and refused to lift the travel ban on U S citizens in Hungary while defending staff against spy accusations.
Governor Battle announced a May 2 special election in Virginia's First Congressional District to fill the unexpired term after the death of Rep. Otis Bland. Democratic, Republican, and Independent candidates may run with three Democrats nominated: William A. Wright, Blake T. Newton, and Edward J. Robeson Jr.
The Middletown Subordinate Grange invites essays from contestants not yet of age on April 15 1950. Entries must be mailed to the Grange and not exceed 800 words. National prizes total 2300 dollars with specific allocations and state prizes offer smaller awards. Judging emphasizes practical application to local soils and community relevance.
Detroit authorities prepared to search the home of Mrs. Constance Moxley for Guy J. Moxley a Texas bridegroom who vanished after marrying on December 21, 1948 a warrant for the search was issued by Garber the chief assistant prosecutor to locate the missing man and the totey tote evidence.
Washington reports snags in writing a strike settlement contract for John L. Lewis and soft coal operators as a federal court blocks certain welfare provisions. Hope remains to resume mining Monday with wage and welfare fund terms reportedly agreed, while Southern operators resist.

DETROIT reports the United Auto Workers plan to demand 125 dollars monthly in pensions and nine cents an hour more pay from General Motors. The package totals 31 cents per hour and covers 235,000 workers as the union prepares to present GM today.
