Presidential secretary says many efforts to confuse and poison defense setup are under way and linked to opposition to the lease lead bonus. Stephen Early questions whether new unit will replace chiefs of Defense and Office of Production. Wilmington March 4 Attorney General James R Morford warned Delaware could become a wide open state if his bid to repeal 200 year old blue laws fails The State House rejected coercion from other officials and plans to keep debating the repeal Meanwhile 493 arrested in Sundays event faced fines of 4 dollars and costs William Hipple Roxana was fined for ejecting before Magistrate Isaac Williams and Raymond Jarvis Selbysville restaurant owner had charges dismissed after residents said many could not eat elsewhere.
Federal mediator James F. Dewey met with Ford union leaders to discuss mediation steps. Dewey planned further talks with Michael Widman Jr and Thomas Donahue as representatives from the United Automobile Workers and related labor groups. The parties aim for joint mediative efforts to resolve tensions.
Merchants of the city are invited to a Thursday meeting in the City Hall Council Chamber at seven o clock. The gathering will elect officers for the Retail Merchants Union for the coming year and decide on trade days and hours. All members and prospective members are urged to attend.

City Councilman James B Blake 89 his wife and a brother were killed in a Baltimore blaze that trapped them in bedrooms on the third floor. Another brother Joseph and his wife escaped from a second story window as flames swept the stairs. Firemen cited suffocation as the cause. Blake had served on the City Council since 1926.
The Winchester district Methodist Church surpassed its Compassion Sunday goal with 2110 collected toward a 2100 target for war relief, training camp work, and relief efforts. Dr W W McIntyre said funds were telegraphed to Bishop W W Peele for report to the Illinois conference in Chicago.
Los Angeles reports storms across California cause hazardous conditions. Flooding forces Red Cross rescue of 20 families by boat in Santa Barbara as water fills homes and blocks roads. Hollywood and Vine area floods, while southern counties face no immediate danger despite floods in other areas.
Contractors reported many skilled workers who joined the Camp Davis anti aircraft center strike have returned to jobs. AFL driven walkout halted work for hours as 3,000 crossed picket lines. Labor figures estimate 4,000 to 6,000 on strike. prestrike workforce ranged 10,000 to 15,000. The union seeks a preferential shop, overtime pay, and double pay for Sundays and holidays. No settlement talks were yet arranged.
Lions Club members will waive their regular meeting next Friday to allow attendance at Charter Nicht exercises in Berryville Virginia. The Berryville club was sponsored by the local unit for the new organization and ceremony.
George Joseph Cook 23, of Harrisburg Pennsylvania admitted strangling Mrs Catherine Pappas in her Bronx apartment after gaining entry by posing as a friend of her husband. He told authorities he also assaulted women in several cities and admitted 15 other assaults.

It was announced this afternoon that sportsmen interested in the Rod and Gun Club for Winchester and county will meet in the county courthouse Thursday night at 7 30. A representative group from the city and county will assemble to discuss plans for the club.

A uniform order will be sent to Richmond Virginia and about $1000 is needed to equip the company. Rookie drills will be held Wednesday and Thursday nights for new members to learn essential details. The unit was mustered in last Friday night by Col Fred H Gallup of the VPF.
Western Maryland lawmakers signal support for Lane to fill the congressional seat left by the death of Congressman William D. Byron in a plane crash last week. Lane, a Maryland former attorney general and Democratic national committeeman, is favored to replace Byron if the vacancy is filled.

Steel for Riverton bridges has arrived to start the superstructure and concrete piers are nearly complete. The warmest day of the period occurred yesterday with calm, clear conditions overall.
In Ankara March reports say the Turkish cabinet met to consider an official message from Adolf Hitler via President Inonu. Field Marshal Fevzi Cakmizli attended. Prime Minister Saydam expected to broadcast soon. Franz Von Papen, with a German mission, was asked to thank the Fuehrer. The contents remain undisclosed.
Berlin dispatch reports German Ambassador Von Papen conveyed a message of friendship to Turkish President Inonu. The Ankara radio noted Inonu received the greeting with great joy and asked Papen to convey thanks to Hitler for sending it.
In Sofia on March, British Minister George W Endel told United States Minister George H Earle of Britain's plan to sever diplomatic relations with Bulgaria tomorrow. Earle ordered the legation to begin or assume custody of British interests across the country.
British officials report a five hour Luftwaffe raid on Cardiff South Wales with firebombs and high explosives. Smoke and ruins marked the city as the German attack aimed at the docks and port facilities. Casualty figures were not immediately known as the night of bombardment continued.
