Accomplishments of The 68th Congress

Washington recalls the sixty-eighth Congress for a tax reduction measure easing moderate earners and notable probes. It highlights the oil inquiry, Justice Department actions, and the Forbes and Stinson cases, plus the Veterans Bureau scandal. The La Follette insurgents reshaped rules before a partisan split, then a confident second session passed key laws including the Soldiers Bonus veto, immigration limits, child labor amendment, and coast guard cooperation against rum running.

Critics Defend Saxophone and Put Onus on Jazz Players

London critics rally to defend the saxophone, arguing the instrument itself shaped jazz. The piece traces Antoine Joseph Sax, born 1814 in Dinant, Belgium, who studied at the Brussels Conservatoire and moved to Paris, producing the saxhorn and later the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, though he died penniless at 82 and largely forgotten.

Old Landmarks Give Ground To Progress In National Capital

Washington March 4 Old landmarks in the national capital are being replaced by modern uses as embassies move nearby and historic houses become offices. The British embassy will relocate from a Victorian building near Connecticut Ave to a site near the Naval Observatory. The Hungarian embassy building is now a cleaning and dyeing shop. The former Mexican embassy is a real estate office while the Italian embassy eyes a million dollar palace. The Russian embassy has been closed for years. The Spanish and Cuban embassies sit close together with amicable relations between their envoys. New legations from Czechoslovakia Egypt Estonia Finland Latvia Lithuania and the Serbs Croats and Slovenes have appeared since the war. The German embassy remains downtown and Japan’s ambassador still lives on Franklin Street. Historic houses such as Mrs Surratt’s former residence and Daniel Webster’s home have given way to modern structures including a Chamber of Commerce building and a new business site for John Hay’s former home.
