Police hunted a hammer slayer described as a 30 year old approx five foot four man in a brown suit who killed Leona Piece a 22 year old Denver divorcee in a Ocean Springs hotel room. The victim and a male companion registered as Mr and Mrs Johnston about 15 hours before the body was found. The hammer used was missing from the desk and later found in an adjoining bath. The fiance Sgt Herman Cole said she planned to marry him after arriving Tuesday and that telegrams did not reach him in time. The man’s ship affiliation and exact motive remain unrevealed as investigators seek a merchant seaman described by a taxi driver and hotel staff.
