Appalachian to Negotiate Over Clinch River Fish Kill
Richmond AP reports Appalachian Power Co. will negotiate with Virginia and Tennessee officials on compensation for a fish kill in the Clinch River after a dam rupture at Carbo Virginia released about 130 million gallons of alkaline liquid killing an estimated 217000 fish. W G Bell Jr. pledged participation, but the company did not specify a repair or payment amount. J H Tackett estimated the river’s recovery to support aquatic life, noting heavy bottom-feeder loss downstream toward the Tennessee line. The board approved stream pollution standards for the Dan Roanoke Smith Yadkin basins to be sent to the Federal agency. A spill of 5700 gallons of formaldehyde from a wrecked truck near Cana was deemed not a major threat, though precautions remained.
