A premature shutdown of the Atlas Centaur second stage prevented orbit instead of delivering the 8,200 pound Centaur stage. NASA reported success in insulation panel ejection and boost pump restart while noting delays threaten moon data plans and future Surveyor missions.
An explosion and fire on a floating oil rig 78 miles southwest of Morgan City Louisiana killed at least four and left 13 or more missing. About 25 survivors were hospitalized in Lakewood, with many in satisfactory condition. The rig, reading and company owned, sank in 180 feet of water after the blast at 3:30 a.m. as gusher gas caused panic and flames spread across the vessel.

In Philadelphia Mississippi the search for the three civil rights workers vanished nine days ago was intensified by order of President Johnson. Rita Schwerner urged sending up to 5,000 federal agents to join the hunt, but the President said he could not authorize that many. The missing pair are Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman, last seen June 21 after leaving jail on a traffic bond. The White House and federal officials pledged intensified efforts to determine what happened.
