The Hoover Commission wraps up its two year mission amid disputes over water power policy and federal reform. It claims its reorganizing plan could balance the budget and enable tax cuts, with a final report from Chairman Herbert Hoover and a note that more reports will follow.
New York Times reporter Charles Grutzner testified before the Senate Internal Security subcommittee that he joined the Communist Party in 1937 and quit in 1940 when he believed the group was not run on democratic principles. He said he left after becoming fed up and noted he was not a dedicated member.

Cpl Harold M Dunn formerly hailed as a local hero in Baldwinsville New York was sentenced by a seven member court martial to eight years at hard labor for aiding the Communist enemy while a prisoner in North Korea He was also given a dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay and allowances Dunn pleaded guilty to writing articles praising the Red enemy and broadcasting urging American families to end the war His wife who is expecting a baby attended the sentencing and Dunn expressed remorse as he stood before Lt Gen Herren and Army review boards
Ladies Auxiliary of U.C.T. hosts a bake sale Saturday July 2 at 9 AM near the W. T. Grant Store. Cedar Creek Church in Marlboro Virginia holds a yard party July 2 at 5 PM featuring chickens and ham suppers.
Frederick County farmers report combining and cutting barley hay and corn cultivation as main activities. Weather has been favorable for two weeks with June rainfall above normal. County Agent John T. Wolfe notes excellent pastures and about 60 percent of barley harvested with yields including Billy Bierer 45 bushels per acre on 9 acres, Stanley Clevenger 40 bushels on 50 acres, and Ft. Coller Farm 60 bushels on 38 acres.
Garbage collection and bus service are suspended due to Independence Day. Monday routes shift. garbage for July 4 will be collected on Thursday July 7.
Dense fog thwarts anew the hunt for four Marine airmen missing off southern Japan. Capt Hodgin P Montague and Lt David W Bell are aboard a Sky Knight and an ordnance officer respectively, with Lt Alan Murdock McAneny Jr and a helicopter crewman also missing. Air Force search coordinators say signals from Bell’s raft were heard but positions remain unfixed as weather worsens.
Area police urged motorists to drive slowly during the busy Fourth of July weekend. The bulk of traffic is expected from tomorrow afternoon to Monday midnight. Last year's Fourth traffic week saw six accidents with five injuries and some property damage.
Five Frederick County 4-H boys and county agent John T. Wolfe earned honors at the 32nd Virginia 4-H Club Short Course. Lynn Wolfe won the leadership award and a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago. Wolfe and four club members were named to attend the American Institute of Cooperation at Purdue University August 7–11. Winchester police report the North Loudoun Sunoco Station was entered overnight. A 1931 Model A Ford truck parked outside was stolen and found abandoned about seven miles north on State Rt 668 near U S Rt 11. Investigators from Winchester police and Frederick County Sheriff’s Office are handling the case.

Buckley Lages Inc of this city was awarded a contract totaling 16 649 for 2.9 miles of U S Route 50 between the Berry's Ferry bridge and Paris. The State Highway Commission in Richmond announced contracts totaling 826 621 for resurfacing work statewide. Bids opened June 15 and 18, with contracts awarded for about 95 miles of heavily traveled highways.
