Farmers Getting Less Consumers Paying More
Government figures show farmers receive lower prices than a year ago while retail food costs rise. The Agriculture Department notes the farm price index fell 4 percent from a year earlier and 6 percent between May 15 and June 15. Meat prices especially dropped, cattle at $32.20 per 100 pounds, while the May retail beef price averaged $1.35 per pound, one cent below May 1973. A task force chaired by Earl L. Butz will study markups in the marketing chain to cut costs for consumers.
