The Democratic platform committee battles over prohibition and silver as delegates idle in Chicago Stadiumm. Byrd favors concise statements suited for billboard display and urges sending the prohibition question to the people by vote while Rooseveltians push for repeal or modification.
The Virginia delegation backs Byrd for the Presidential nomination amid a busy convention scene. Delegates interview voters, distribute literature, and note Roosevelt’s struggles over the two thirds rule. Byrd is praised for backing party principles while repeal supporters push to end Prohibition era restrictions.
William A. Haines a native of Winchester aged 65 and longtime Staunton banker and church leader died at his East Frederick Street home after illness since February. He served as cashier of Planters Bank and was an elder of the Second Presbyterian Church. He married Theodosia May Hamilton in 1901 and leaves three children and a widow. Burial followed at Thornrose Cemetery with honorary pallbearers drawn from Staunton’s prominent citizens.
Bids for three Valley Pike projects from Staunton to Winchester were opened in Richmond by the Virginia Department of Highways. The Staunton segment from 12.2 miles south of the Rockingham line to Staunton city limits carries a $32,048.24 bid by Clinch Valley Construction Company. Winchester to Middletown projects total $120,310.76 with Brown Paving Company of Lexington, N C submitting bids of $55,886.22 and $64,424.54 respectively. The awards reflect Virginia’s large-year construction push and fiscal year planning.
Dr. Hanson and Roy Rhodes, a former Harrisonburg boy, visited the headquarters as callers today.
Twenty one fruit growers and apple salesmen from West Virginia Virginia Pennsylvania and Maryland met at the Shenandoah Hotel in Martinsburg to discuss Yellow Transparents and early varieties. They urged leaving small fruit on trees and marketing only Transparents at least two inches to avoid red ink returns. Illinois reported prices up to 3 50 delivered to terminal markets while Tennessee saw similar gains before supply increased.

Mrs. Mary Annette Grubbs 62 wife of G W Grubbs died at 10 last night at home 687 Berryville avenue after a lingering illness. Born in Clarke county she moved to Winchester 12 years ago. Surviving are husband son Granville granddaughters Gwynne Betty Unger two sisters and five brothers. Funeral Thursday at 3 pm from Berryville avenue home conducted by Rev E A Lambert with interment at Mount Hebron Cemetery.

Kermit Orndorff and Wayne MeeTlwee face a magistrates court hearing to decide if they will be held for a Frederick County grand jury on murder charges in the disappearance of Mrs Frances Nicholas Orndorff. The 10 a.m. session before Justices A J Tavener, A R Rinker and W D Parker will be in the Circuit Court House. Bond set at 5000 appears posted for Orndorff. McIlwee remains jailed awaiting the hearing with evidence details pending.
