President Carter announced the United States will admit 14,000 Indochinese refugees a month, doubling the current level, with a one year commitment. The seven nation summit urged a UN conference on refugees and pledged more funds for relief and resettlement.
In Geneva the 13 nation cartel set a new base price of 18 dollars to 23.50 a barrel and allowed surcharges up to 2 dollars per barrel. The move, the largest since 1974, will raise U S gasoline and heating oil costs about four cents a gallon and takes effect July 1.
Vice President Mondale urged independent truckers to move the country, while drivers vowed to halt Alabama fuel deliveries and North Carolina guarded fuel terminals. National Guard mobilized as Maine protesters gathered in Augusta awaiting Gov Brennan. Violence rose with firebombs and gunfire on routes. supermarkets faced looming price hikes and shortages. Independent drivers have been striking over diesel costs and weight limits for three weeks, threatening economy and food supplies.
