Vance Says U.S. Policy Not Tilting in Mideast Talks
Secretary of State Cyrus Vance tells the AP the United States will not tilt toward Israel or Egypt as peace talks resume. He says Washington could support a settlement under the current Israeli government and opposes Egypt’s demand for Israel to relinquish every inch of territory from 1967. He notes the 1967 UN resolution does not specify borders and that borders are for negotiations.

The Commerce Department reports Americans averaged 15.4 pounds of candy last year, the lowest since 1939. Higher prices and smaller bars help explain the drop, with candy bars remaining the dominant 29 percent of sales and about 240 bars per person. Sugar concerns and ads on children’s TV also factor into shifts toward sugar substitutes.
