House OKs defense appropriations amid budget trims
The House approved the defense appropriations bill by a 410 to 1 vote, authorizing about two billion dollars less than the administration requested for the next fiscal year. Rep. Curtis criticized the cuts while McNamara warned they would reduce military strength by 60,000 personnel and air support. President Kennedy also scored a Senate victory of 65 to 30 on a $455 million boost for the low in spirits areas program, aimed at spurring jobs in regions with high unemployment. The House may later reconcile with the Senate measure after the July Fourth recess.
