Yanks Tap Italian Woods For Army Lumber Supply
Allied Force Headquarters in Italy reports the Peninsular Base 800th Engineer Forestry Company mills about 6 million board feet of lumber monthly. Captain Horace C. Ediksson says demand exceeds wartime combat needs as pine oak beech and other timbers are logged using 50 Italian civilian workers. Since December 1943 the unit has produced over 89 million board feet and 8 thousand piling pieces, filling more than 12 thousand railroad cars.
