Soviet forces launched a multi pronged assault toward Minsk with heavy air support. Stormoviks blasted German armor as General Cherniakhovsky pressed from the east while Bagramian and Rokossovsky led northern and southern thrusts, narrowing the gap to Minsk and threatening surrounding points.
About 35 newsboys visited Marks Shows, Inc. meeting at the Winchester Star office then rode a truck to the old airport where the 43truck carnival runs all week under the Rouss Fire Company. They enjoyed lemonade rides, the Merry-Go-Round, Ferris Wheel, The Whip, Moon Rocket, and viewed Zoma Wild Life World Fair Oddities and the Wall of Death after ice cream.

Virginia's national committeeman Major Henry A. Wise and committeewoman Mrs. Murray Boocock declined reelection at a delegation caucus. The group planned to meet again to name successors with a choice for committeewoman expected between Mrs. E. P. Goad and Mrs. W. H. Logan. Predictions favored Dewey on the first ballot with most votes.
Nazis move troops into Finnish cities as Helsinki agrees to German aid against the Soviet advance. Finns report a full alignment with Nazi Germany with Ribbentrop promising continued war against Russia and a merged Finnish communique into Berlin's. President Ryti sought Mannerheim, while censorship limited details.
The first three way shuttle bombing operation of the European war was disclosed today with U S Eighth Air Force Fortresses flying from England to Russia and Italy to bomb a Polish oil refinery near Drohobycz. Mustangs escorted the mission and airdromes near Laon were attacked by Fortresses and Liberators.
The Fifth War Loan bond sale rose about $3 700 yesterday at the Victory Livestock Sale tied to the Virginia Livestock Auction market. Highlights include a $1 000 bid on rabbits donated by M E Grove of Winchester and bought by Victor S Myers of College Park Maryland and a goat that moved through the ring six times in the event led by Julian Everly and sponsored by the Frederick County USDA War Board.
Cpl. Upton Snider, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Snider of 117 N. Cameron gaset, serves two years this August with the Signal Corps in the South Pacific. He says he receives The Winchester Star in packs of two or three, and the papers always come through.
Gov. John W. Bricker of Ohio was nominated as running mate for Gov. Thomas E. Dewey at the Republican National Convention in Chicago. Dewey was formally nominated for President by a vote of 1,056 to 1, with Bricker withdrawing his own presidential bid. Grant Ritter of Beloit cast a lone vote for Gen. Douglas MacArthur.
CHICAGO June 28 Gov Dwight Griswold of Nebraska formally placed Thomas E Dewey in nomination for the Presidency at the Republican National Convention declaring the New Yorker will win in November and become the man of the peacetime American future He said this man will win because he is faced in the direction the American people want to do Griswold extolled the 42 year old Dewey saying the Republicans offer youth vigor integrity and seriousness of purpose He noted there are now 26 Republican governors Continued on Page 3 Col 5
The Supreme Allied Expeditionary Force reported the first two weeks of the Normandy invasion cost 40 549 Allied casualties from June 6 to 20. Americans accounted for 3 082 killed and 13 121 wounded plus 7 959 missing. British totals were 1 842 killed and 8 599 wounded with 3 131 missing. Canadian losses were 363 killed 1 359 wounded and 1 093 missing. German prisoners and uncounted dead numbered in the low thousands.
Advanced Allied forces in New Guinea report heavy blows on three Japanese Caroline bases and Yap installations. Liberators over Palau Woleai and Yap dropped 35 tons of bombs, destroying planes and damaging runways as New Guinea operations target enemy supply lines.
Allied armored forces pound into Caen area as British tanks smash through German lines on the Cherbourg peninsula. Lt Gen Miles Dempsey leads the push with 30 000 to 40 000 prisoners estimated in the sector. Ground and air actions near Caen threaten remaining German road links amid a massive tank battle.
World War II dispatch reports British armor outflanking Caen, breaking Odon River defenses south west of the city while units move on Caen from the north. Allied casualties listed at 40 549 since D Day against 70 000 German forces.
Mr and Mrs Henry Seal of 104 West Boscawen Street report a letter from their son Pfc Henry Seal Jr written June 18 stating he is in a hospital recovering from recently received wounds. He will be there for some time and asks friends to write. He is attached to Company I 116 Infantry 29th Division.
The city reports 177 children signed up across three playgrounds and 64 at Rouss Park for the summer recreation program. Attendance varied by site with Handley 18 boys 4 girls, Virginia 17 boys 31 girls, Douglas 34 boys 29 girls. Thursday events include storytelling by Fred Ritter, Troop II at Vir ae 3:00 and Handley 3:45.
