At a large meeting the Winchester State Guards vote to change status and join the Virginia National Guard. Of 79 members, 44 vote yes, 18 oppose, and 6 more ready to join, needing 30 more to reach the 80 required to muster. Commissioned officers favor the move.
President H B McCormac announces rapid team formation for the chamber drive. Executive committee will include Logan R Fay and H D Fuller with captains such as H H McGuire L Green M J Baptist D W Capton A H Jackson J N Good. Col Alonzo Simmons assists, optimistic goal of 200 members, meeting at 8 tonight in the Rest Room.
Local exemption headquarters report that Frederick and Winchester counties can supply about 210 men in Class 1 for July. An additional 60 from other classes may be moved up, 100 of 185 registrants from June 5 expected available, totaling roughly 210. July calls may require all to fill local quota before Sept 1, with 104 men drawn from the jurisdiction. Secretary Baker’s statement suggests no need to lower draft age.
Washington reports ongoing resumption of major German offensives on the Western Front with Allied casualties and Marine Corps tallies. American forces overseas recorded 56 casualties including 24 killed in action and 22 severely wounded. Marine casualties totaled 50 with 17 killed and 7 died of wounds, bringing the corps totals to 13 officers dead and 352 enlisted dead among 1,162 total casualties.
A wireless report from Stockholm claims the Bolshevik regime in Russia is overthrown with Nicholaevitch elected emperor. Lenine Trotzky allegedly fled Moscow as German forces reportedly occupy the city and Korniloff and Kal edines lead. The note warns the info is unconfirmed and from Russian circles.
J Olin Faulkner, visiting at his mother's home in Catlettsburg Kentucky, will leave Tuesday for City Point Virginia to begin duties as a supervisor at the E I DuPont de Nemours Company plant. Faulkner has served four years as superintendent of Catlettsburg city schools and now shifts to industrial work.
Shirley Carter appoints Mrs. B. Virginia Smith as assistant in the Winchester food administration. Smith will visit merchants and manufacturers to obtain their statements on sugar on hand for city needs. Local God Administrator for Winchester.
At the residence of Mrs A M Baker on Southee street the entertainment raised 78 dollars in net receipts. Funds were turned over to C Vernon Eddy secretary of the Winchester and Frederick County Chapter American Red Cross to aid needy and suffering children of the allies abroad.
Clarke County residents are invited to a meeting of the Threshermen and Farmers Protective Association at the Berryville Virginia courthouse on Saturday June 29. All members should attend and all farmers are welcome. H J Martin secretary.
In Huntington West Virginia on June 28 Reverend Henry Martin Marley an elderly Wyoming county Baptist minister was held on bond for making moonshine whiskey. He admits producing the liquor but claims it was the very best quality and that he sought no wealth. Marley is described as a rural blues preacher from the hills of southern West Virginia and Kentucky aligned with the Hardshell Baptists who oppose formal preacher education.
Complaint filed at police headquarters after a crowd of boys playing ball in the street at Main and Cork streets struck a woman with a baby carriage in the side. She had just undergone hospital surgery and was left badly hurt. Bystanders aided her and police plan to stop future games.
Mrs. Frank Miller of West Piccadilly Street received a letter from her son Percy Miller of this city. He has joined a machine gun company in France and left an Atlantic port several weeks ago. He says he is delighted with the parts of France he has seen and is in good health and spirits.
An insurance firm Hansbrough and Carter advertises low rates for wheat and grain fire and lightning insurance. Brief society notes mention Mrs Charles Ridgely White visiting Winchester and Mr and Mrs W M Swimley visiting Winchester on business.
Important meeting of the first troop of Boy Scouts at their headquarters tonight at 7 30 o'clock. Every member urged to be present. Scoutmaster assures attendance is essential.
General Pershing announced in a public communique that fifty additional Citations awarded by the French commander for heroism and gallantry at Cantigny were given to American officers and men. The awards were announced by the War Department press service in Washington.
Soldiers' day will be observed at Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church South on Sunday June 30. Pastor Rev F M Richardson will preach at 11 o clock and explain Why We Are in the War. A letter to Hon H St George Tucker from Colonel Marshall in France reports Major Albert S J Tucker wounded June 3 by a bursting shell in the right shoulder is improving. He was treated at a first aid hospital and in a camp hospital and will be sent to southern France to recover.
Shirley Carter, Local Food Administrator for the City of Winchester, announces that large sugar users including ice cream makers and retailers must obtain licenses by July 1. Inspectors will seek sworn statements of sugar on hand as of July 1.
Judge Whiting appoints county residents J. N. White J. J. Crabill and J. Dr. Wright as trustees of St. John's Lathearn Church near Old Furnace to replace the late George W. Crabill J. H. Williams and J. H. Clowser.

George Owens, travelling representative for the Good Roads Machinery Company of Kenneth Square, Pa., died suddenly in Mechanicsburg, Pa., a day or two ago. He was well known in Winchester and had many friends in the area.
Reports indicate preparations for a large German assault extending from Amiens to Ypres, with air raids on Paris anticipated. Paris was bombed again, and Austrian and Hungarian unrest and strikes disrupted Vienna with calls for more food immediate peace police reform and dissolution of parliament. German chancellor Hertling was summoned as the page continues.
Businessmen push War Savings stamps in their shops reporting large sales this afternoon. Miss Augusta Conrad, director of the work in Winchester, will report totals early next week and expect results to exceed forecasts. Several stores displayed windows to promote the drive with H. K. Green and Brother selling $1,000 worth of stamps before a fresh supply arrived. Other eye catching displays appeared at Molny and Seal dry goods and at the Northern Virginia Power Company offices.
A yard party will be held in Gainesboro Virginia on Saturday night July 6 with proceeds for the Red Cross. The public is invited to attend and support the good cause. Each baked potato eaten will help fill the ship with wheat.
Three boys from Luray Virginia aged 12 to 13 robbed the Sbr yock and Fultz store then attempted to wreck a Norfolk and Western passenger train by placing obstructions on the track. Detectives captured them and they were sent to Virginia State Correction until age 21.
