Virginia begins a new era with 803 laws by the 1966 General Assembly. The sales tax rises to 4 percent starting July 1, and hogs may be marketed as Smithfield hams even if fed more than peanuts. Birds designated nuisance birds at midnight and traffic rules shift with faster highway speeds and permanent license revocation for habitual offenders.
Town crier Frances Ballenger reports two stray cattle near Highview School on Rt 277. A black and white Holstein and a Charolais cow weighing 800 to 900 pounds have been at her property since early April. She asks the owner to identify and remove them and share the feed costs.
A special business meeting of the Eagles is scheduled for June 24 at 8 o clock. The gathering will be held at the F O E hall located at Home 123 North in Loudoun.
Correction notes that the electric drill advertised at 14.88 is a Sears drill, not a Craftsman, as previously stated. The ad references Sears, Roebuck and Co.
Frank G. Shattuck II announced a near million dollar expansion of Schrafft's frozen food plant at 801 N Kent St to meet rising institutional demand and serve 53 restaurants in eight states. The project adds about 37 500 square feet, aims to double annual output, and will employ about 160 workers after completion. Henry Adams notes Schrafft's is the only Schrafft's processing plant outside New York and currently the only one planned for expansion.
Charles Mayhew 41 of Gainesboro found guilty of voluntary manslaughter for a shotgun shooting that killed his brother Francis Eugene Mayhew 33 near Gainesboro after a car accident on Rt 600. Jury set sentence at four years. defense to appeal July 10.

Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko told the Soviet parliament that the government is ready to exchange opinions on curtailing offensive and defensive rocket systems. He urged general disarmament, called for a nuclear weapons convention, and noted U S Soviet strains over Vietnam while citing potential improvements if the United States respects Soviet security. He warned Beijing to heed dialogue without deterring future ties.
Winchester hosts nearly 400 World War I veterans for the 11th annual Department of Virginia and Ladies Auxiliary convention at the George Washington Hotel. Events run Friday through Sunday with registrations, joint sessions, addresses by notable officials, officer elections, a banquet, and Sunday memorial services.
U S troops begin abandoning and leveling the Khe Sanh base in northwest South Vietnam freeing Marine defenders to join mobile strike forces. Brig Gen Winant Sidle says the site will be leveled and bunkers closed as part of a new mobile warfare concept.

City Council awards a 359,861 contract to R. L. Rider and Co. for a 100 by 4,500 foot runway and taxiways at Municipal Airport. The project totals 534,000 with federal 267,000 state 135,000 and local 139,000 shares. FAA grant offer must be accepted by June 30.
