Marcher Meredith Returns to Mississippi Crusade After Wounds
Meredith leads a Canton to Tougaloo College march with police guarding the Meredith courthouse. Violence erupts as marchers are dispersed by tear gas at a school yard. He recuperates in New York at Columbia University before returning Friday, fronts the column on U.S. 51, and then rides ahead due to leg swelling. The procession echoes black power with civil rights factions present. A clash on a white neighborhood street sparks taunting exchanges between marchers and residents.
