Prohibition against early varieties sent abroad in response to demand causes great hardship for Virginia growers who have supplied the market. Embassy claims the maggot infestation is the main cause and argues for action to protect local shipments.
James R. Dushane of Winchester, connected with J. O. Sims in London, one of the UK’s largest apple exporting firms, received a cablegram this morning from Sims home office.
A London order bans U S Commercial No 1 and other grades from entering parts of the United Kingdom in retaliation for a recent high tariff bill. Virginia and Shenandoah-Cumberland-Potomac apple growers face peak export season disruption as shipments of No 1 and No 2 grades and unclassified apples are barred.
The Handlian from Handley High School was rated first in Class B by the Virginia High School Literary and Athletic League. The judges praised its form and photography as produced entirely by Handley students under faculty supervision with Edward Koons as editor.
The Lucky Strike course draws many youngsters alongside older players. Nelson Page and Dick Norton, both 17, posted par scores of 43. Norton coaches and scores, guiding new players like Betty Riley, H B McCormac, Joe Massie, and Bruce Shade. Judge Weems and Dr McFaden also play, with Dr McFaden scoring 47.

At a committee meeting for fresh air children in Winchester and Frederick county, agencies pledged support for an August 8 arrival date. The program, funded by the New York Herald Tribune Fresh Air Fund, offers urban youths a two week rural stay to experience farm life and grass underfoot.
A band concert will be held at 8 o clock in the evening on the lawn of the Court House. All are invited with families asked to keep order during the performance. Prof Mellwee has arranged an attractive program including March Herbert Clark Triumphant Overture Barber of Seville selections The Perfect Song ballet music from William Tell foxtrot song and waltzes with pieces by Brockton Lamothe Shutt and Allegiance.
Universal Ken Maynard western The Fighting Legion features action packed gunfights and brawls. It plays at the Colonial Theatre tomorrow in matinee and night shows marking the venue’s first talking picture. The season will run Saturdays only on summer months.
The Winchester baseball team will play Hose Company No. 5 at the ballpark Saturday afternoon at 3 15. Harold Kinsey, last year’s pitcher, has returned and will be seen in action within a few days. Fans are urged to attend and contribute more generously.

Programs will air 6 15 to 7 p m, targeting Washington area and apple exhibits, racing, and fair entries amid broad sponsor support.

A permit was issued in Frederick county clerk's office granting Rev. C. E. Seastrunk Evangelical Lutheran minister authority to perform marriage rites in Virginia.

Mrs Richard Evelyn Byrd Sr mother of Rear Admiral Richard Byrd received a life size bust of her son depicting him on the bridge of the City of New York. The gift from Charles Bobb of New York backs the Antarctic expedition and the bust will be on display at Handley Library for a month starting July 1.
The First Christian Church Sunday school plans an annual picnic at Jordan Springs on Tuesday afternoon July 1. Transportation will be provided from the church corner Braddock and Clifford streets at 1 30 o clock. A committee on games will provide amusement for all ages.
Representative Stephen G. Porter longtime chairman of the House foreign relations committee died at Allegheny General Hospital of cirrhosis. The 61 year old statesman was internationally known in diplomatic circles. Funeral arrangements were not yet announced.

Four city playgrounds in Winchester will open on Tuesday July 1 with supervising leaders named for each site. John S. Brown Jr will oversee Handley School grounds, Brooks Flickinger the Friends’ Meeting House site, Miss Sara Bell Shirkey the Harris Addition area, and Miss Mary Hyde the colored children’s ground along with Mary Hogan. The program emphasizes safe play, supervised activities, storytelling, and folk games. They invite all parents to send children and invite boys under sixteen to join a Legion sponsored baseball team, with games 9 am to 12 pm.
A mob of about 200 in Port Arthur tried to lynch Rainey Williams after he confessed to eight assaults. Police used tear gas and sped Williams toward Beaumont, where he was jailed for safety after officers fired into the air and protected the prisoner.
Circuit Court Judge Williams grants a partial divorce to Walter P. Fahnestock from Edith Lutz Fahnestock on desertion grounds. Papers allege she deserted March 20, 1928.
