Minnie Mangum, former officer of a financially wrecked institution, was sentenced today in Norfolk to 20 years in prison for embezzlement and related offenses.
A 59 year old woman, Miss Mangum, received two consecutive 10 year terms for embezzlement totaling 1 082 968 25 and for false statements to the State Corporation Commission. Additional indictments for forgery and false reporting were reduced or dropped. She was taken to Norfolk City Jail for transfer to Goochland Virginia state farm for women after sentencing.
City Frederick Clarke dies in a crash where alcohol and gasoline played a role. Police report indicate driver impaired leading to a fatal collision on a rural highway. Investigators alt. None.
The O'Sullivan Rubber Corporation mailed a proposed new contract to the Rubber Workers Union as the six week strike by production workers continues. Company aims to use the document in Friday talks at 10 a.m. to break the deadlock, the sixth negotiation session. Union officials briefed members at the local armory after today’s meeting.
Gen. Nathan Twining met in Moscow as the U S Air Force chief warned Washington will seek worldwide controls before disarming. Soviet aviation day displayed three delta-wing interceptors, two Farman labeled fighters, two Flashlight fighters, and a twin-engine turboprop transport. About 200000 attended at Tushino Airport with 120 fighters and 40 helicopter transports.
Weather forecaster predicts a drop tonight with a low around 60 after a high of 84 and a low 66 earlier today. Tomorrow remains cooler and drier with near normal temps for the rest of the month and chances of showers on Wednesday and Saturday totaling about half an inch.
A Baltimore family of four and a Yorktown Virginia couple were hospitalized after a crash at the intersection of US Routes 50 and 340 in Waterloo. Shirley Bernard Keener 12 suffered a compound arm fracture a severe arm laceration and a concussion. His father William Keener 62 had a head laceration and hand abrasion. His mother Ethel Keener 34 had forehead and chin lacerations. Kenneth 2 had minor abrasions and was kept hospitalized for observation. Richard J Schombert 41 of Yorktown and his wife Velma 29 sustained a concussion brow lacerations facial contusions and fractured ribs respectively. The Keener driver was in a 1946 Dodge. Camp Rock Enon near Gore opened yesterday with about 115 Scouts present plus troop leaders and staff. Directed this year by Thomas Gibson of Front Royal, district Scout executive of the Two Rivers and Shen Co districts. Run by the Shenandoah Area Boy Scout Council, the camp will run seven weeks this summer with swimming hiking and crafts among planned activities.
President Eisenhower planned to leave Walter Reed Army Hospital for Gettysburg farm this weekend with Mrs. Eisenhower. Doctors reported a very satisfactory recovery and a nine hour sleep, while plans to celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary at the farm were noted.
James Schaefer a 68 year old retired machinist lay helpless for two days after a paralytic stroke while sunbathing at Crandon Park Beach in Miami. He remained in serious condition as temperatures rose into the high 80s and a church picnic group finally alerted authorities Friday evening.
The Guatemalan government declares a state of alarm and martial law following police action at a mass meeting organized by the National Civic Committee. President Carlos Castillo Armas regime cites intention to prevent seditious disorders.
Governor Stanley plans a major overhaul of the state hospital board after a report by his three man investigative team found gross negligence in the Southwestern State Hospital administration. The panel urged removal of the superintendent and medical chief and resignation by the clinical director.
A British judge was shot by gunmen in Nicosia, with no immediate details on the motives or casualties given in the report. Police and local authorities investigated the incident as officials reviewed security at the scene.
Two gunmen shot British judge Justice Bernard Shaw in Nicosia as he sat in a guarded car. Shaw, who had sentenced three Cypriot rebels to death, was seriously wounded. British troops cordoned the Armenian quarter and a woman was wounded as forces responded. Rebels of the EOKA movement and attacks on police stations and bridges followed, while the 16 day operation to locate George Grivas yielded information but no capture.
In Northern Nigeria a British Overseas Airways Argonaut crashed after takeoff from Kano killing at least 26 aboard and 269 total. Among the dead is G. K. Eysaman, 32, of Mohawk New York area manager for Mobiloil Nigeria who planned a year in the United States. Survivors include Captain H V Tomlinson and four crew members.
The Shenandoah Gas Co plans to finish its city natural gas distribution by about July 15, with work having begun in January 1955 and resumed in late March. Maps show completed and proposed routes, and the system draws supply from a 26 inch Atlantic Seaboard line extending from near Charleston to Rockville with a 6 inch main laid starting last January.
The Salvation Army camp at Shade's Park starts with about 65 children aged six to 15. The three week program costs 12.50 per child per week, funded by local civic clubs and businesses. A staff of ten adults assists Mrs. Lynn Wiseman as enrollment expands next week to 55 and the final week to 74.
In Central Falls Rhode Island authorities face a date dispute for newborn Susan Agnes Merow born at midnight Saturday. The hospital must choose whether to list her birth as June 23 or June 24.
