Federal payroll growth and wartime transfer fuel budget cut calls
The joint committee report shows 1,341,683 more federal payroll workers in peacetime than 1939, despite a wartime peak drop of 1,476,437 since 1945. Nonwar departments added 318,167 from 1945 to January, while bureaus expand. The study argues for deep cuts to the President’s budget amid transition. It also notes a nutrition claim that balanced meals may cost about 15 dollars per person annually, a point debated by scientists.
