Washington AP It is reported that Atty. Gen Kennedy says the president is likely to be reelected despite bitter civil rights controversy. He notes administration support for civil rights measures and warns against massive DC protests while the bill is considered.
Noah Long brought to The Crier a branch of the chicory plant with pure white flowers, a rarity since flowers are usually blue to purple or pink. The find was along the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tracks in Winchester’s northern area.
Haines chosen as president of the Virginia Federation of Postal Clerks at the 42nd annual convention ending in Danville. C W Bush of Winchester named eighth vice president. Earl Purdue of Richmond to edit the Virginia Postal Clerk. Winchester locally invited to host the 1964 convention.
The Navy sends two man bathyscaphe Trieste a mile down to the Atlantic seabed near the Thresher wreck area 220 miles from Boston. Capt. Frank A. Andrews reports evidence and debris at the site, including magnetic contacts and a battery plate, with underwater camera photos confirming recent debris.
Virginia Electric and Power Co proposes moving the planned transmission line 10 to 30 miles north of the original route to bypass Clarke Warren Fauquier and Loudoun counties. The new route would use Potomac Electric and Power Co. rights of way and avoid the hunt country estates but delays may push completion beyond the 1965 target. Wealthy landowners oppose the towers, fearing landscape damage and falling land values.
In Las Vegas New Mexico a possibly final reunion of Roosevelt's Roughriders is held with only three of 18 survivors present. Attendees include Jesse D Langdon 85 of Long Island NY who drove to attend Charles O Hopping 90 of Long Beach CA and Frank C Brito about 90 of Las Cruces NM.
Byron de La Beckwith, a white man, is charged along with others in a federal complaint related to the slaying of Medgar Evers. FBI agents arrested Beckwith in Greenwood under the Civil Rights Act, alleging a conspiracy to injure and oppress Evers in his rights. Evidence includes a fingerprint and a telescopic sight linked to a .30 caliber rifle used in the shooting.
Mrs Frances Brant of Winchester will be charged tomorrow with murder in the fatal shooting of Hartack at his home near Charles Town. Prosecutor John C Skinner announced the charge after police said Brant was found wounded in the Hartack home and Hartack died of internal bleeding from a single .22 caliber shot. An inquest is planned Tuesday as FBI tests on the revolver and bullets are reviewed.
Virginia's 1963 apple tree survey shows a 20 percent decline over seven years with 1 675 million trees statewide and Frederick County housing 27 percent of non bearing trees. The Shenandoah Valley holds 53 percent of total trees, Frederick alone 25 percent, and four counties account for most losses. Red Delicious dominates new plantings at 50 percent. early fall varieties 5 percent.

George Washington Gordon charged with murder and assault with intent to murder in the May 29 1962 slaying of Joseph Leon DesRosiers will not stand a trial until July 12. Judge Elliott Marshall granted a second continuance at the request of Commonwealth's Attorney Joseph A Massie Jr. The witness illness delay persists. Also in circuit court Gary Leroy Humes's defense may examine weapons and a log linked to a March 18 shooting of Forrest Hubbard. Hubbard's body was found 12 days later near Poor House Road. Humes faces trial tomorrow. Robert Pry was sentenced to two years for breaking and entering and grand larceny with suspended sentence. James Miller was not sentenced. Deputy Merlian Marshall testified about a lie detector test. Probation officer Harv ey did not recommend probation.
President Kennedy and West German Chancellor Adenauer open talks on creating a NATO nuclear surface fleet aimed at a treaty ready for the U S Senate by next January. They seek allied backing from Britain and Italy while avoiding a exclusive German American force. Large crowds greet Kennedy across Germany as delays and diplomacy shape the visit.
The General steam engine arrives at Berryville and will be watered by a local fire plug due to the Norfolk and Western depot water tank gone. Firemen led by John H Enders will fill the boiler from 9 03 to 9 23 a m as spectators gather station master and fire engine present before continuing to Shepherdstown West Virginia and points north.
A Berryville, Virginia man Luther Thomas Cain age 41 and six other people were injured in a three vehicle collision on the Beltway near McLean today according to dispatch from the police press. Cain was employed by Burkholder and Burkholder construction of Winchester.
