Incredible Owens Walked and Talked After Fatal Blast
Lawrence E. Owens, 23, assistant manager of Raylass store, died at Winchester Memorial Hospital seven fifty last night from injuries in yesterday’s basement explosion. He walked out of wreckage ten minutes after the blast, guided himself to aid, and spoke despite complete body burns. He leaves his wife Colleen and parents Charles J. and Lucy Owens, plus five sisters. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Jones funeral home with Rev. E. S. Ellmore officiating.

Washington reports indicate John L. Lewis and most soft coal operators may sign a new contract by tonight. The proposal would raise miners wages by 12 to 15 cents an hour and boost the welfare fund levy from 10 to about 15 cents per ton, with a $1 per day wage increase and a doubled pension fund.
