Washington reports 87 304 announced American casualties in all theaters with 15 132 killed or died of wounds. Army losses total 63 958 while Navy Marine Corps and Coast Guard losses reach 23 346 with 7 604 dead. Stimson warns future operations may bring heavier casualties, especially in the Philippines.
Several squadrons of E Lancasters completed a shuttle mission from Britain to Africa, bombing Friedrichshafen in Germany and La Spezia in Italy on the way home. The raids covered about 1250 miles each way, damaged Zeppeli n works and Maybach plant, and set oil stores afire at La Spezia.
London reports Prime Minister Churchill refused to address the Commons about a new Far East command to fight Japan after Field Marshal Sir Archibald Wavell’s appointment.
