Lexington resident W E Byrne wins election to represent the seventh district on the city council. Byrne will assume duties as a council member, outlining priorities for local governance and community concerns.
Mrs Christine Tew of Portsmouth was reelected president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Virginia Department Veterans of Wars. New officers include Frances Jones Staunton and Lilian Duffy Ocean View as senior and junior vice presidents, with Susie Walker Portsmouth treasurer and Daisy Dabney Staunton conductress. Color bearers named for the year are M. J. Thacker Lucy Laurence Bessie Edwards and Dye Pender. The fifteenth annual encampment adjourned to meet next June in Ocean City Virginia. Miss Mary Lee Dovel, after five weeks as assistant Home Demonstration Agent in Frederick county, is appointed Home Demonstration Agent in Shenandoah county. Lloyd Christie 44 of Havre De Grace died in an early morning automobile crash south of Elkton. Elmer Bulock drove the car Christie rode in. Adolphus Mitchell of New York City is held in jail awaiting inquest results.
Rome June 23 The Tevere reports Pope Pius XI will skip audiences for two months starting July 1 to conserve strength. Vatican could not confirm the plan though prelates suggested audiences may continue on a smaller scale.
Lucia Panzarini, who had lived 20 years in Los Angeles, returned to Bari with her husband Carlo. She kissed her mother Signora Fiore Turi, who then collapsed and died at the daughter's feet.

Promoter Mike Jacobs announced a five year exclusive deal with Joe Louis securing four fights per year for the champion. Braddock also signed a three year contract ensuring action for the dethroned fighter. Jacobs pledged payment to both even without fights and predicted Louis would be the most active heavyweight champion.

Mrs. Carmelia Ruth Freed, sought for nearly a year in the slaying of Audrey Vallette, surrendered in Chicago. The victim, a north side blond party girl, was found fatally shot in a near north side hotel on July 2, 1936. Witnesses identified Freed leaving the hotel before the body’s discovery.
Judge Philip Williams in Frederick Circuit Court appoints Burr P. Harrison as receiver for Pommell Inc to recover 3211.88 plus costs. The attachable assets include a 500 gallon distilling unit, 600 gallons of brandy, fermenting tanks, bottles, kegs, and two 108 gallon tanks. The receiver holds the property pending further orders and possible continued operation.
Washington June 23 Internal Revenue Commissioner Guy T. Helvering told a congressional tax inquiry that Cecil DeMille the film producer formed a personal holding company dominated by himself and family to channel earnings. The difference between DeMille’s salary and his actual director earnings was funneled into the corporation as surplus. He said DeMille claimed the corporate reserve would fund future motion picture production.
