President Eisenhower sat up for 45 minutes in a chair as White House aides joined a work conference in Washington. The White House signaled continued recovery from his operation and trimmed daily medical bulletins from three to two per day with Saturday only at noon.
Three residents died in a one story frame building at a home for the aged run by the Tenacre Foundation in Princeton New Jersey. The blaze started by smoking in a room left at least one person hospitalized and others treated on scene. Fire Chief Cahill described the fire as explosive and the building erected in 1928 was set for demolition. Nine residents escaped to safety as two winged sections burned.
Alabama judge asserts civil rights were violated for eight penniless Negro children and a mother sent from Ohio to Livingston. He calls for federal and state probes and notes the family were Ohio residents entitled to welfare, while custody actions and welfare eligibility are disputed in Cleveland and Livingston.
Boyd Ramey Jr son of Mr and Mrs W B Ramey Hayfield was named state winner in meat animal competition at the 33rd annual 4-H Club Short Course at Virginia Tech He will attend the National 4-H Congress in Chicago in November as a delegate Joining him as a meat animal winner was Ronald E Krum of Botetourt County Other 4-H events and awards were announced including candle lighting and All Stars taps The Blacksburg assembly noted persistent farm projects and earnings by Ramey across eight years of meat animal work and livestock judging achievements through district and state contests
The Virginia Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church OKs a 250000 drive to finance Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music’s relocation from Dayton to Winchester. The plan, discussed at Martinsburg, seeks external fund raising counsel and targets alumni and friends alongside the Conference. Bishop Gregory chaired, with Fund drive officials detailing campaign workings to Winchester area supporters.
Two simultaneous sessions mark the 35th annual Virginia Federation of Post Office Clerks and Auxiliary convention at the George Washington Hotel. Speakers include John F. Bowen and Burr P. Harrison as 200 delegates arrive for the three day meeting with a joint banquet scheduled this evening.
Washington officials express concern over a possible steel strike but plan to stay out of bargaining for now. If talks stall by mid next week the government may reconsider intervention and the Taft Hartley act could be invoked, delaying any showdown until after elections.
The Peters burg Transit Co announced it will shut down operations effective July 22 amid a probable strike by drivers and maintenance personnel.
William P. Lear and wife Moya headed from West Berlin to Schonefeld on a private twin engine Cessna 310 in the first such passenger flight behind the Iron Curtain. They planned a brief layover in Moscow to see the air show and return to their four children in Geneva. Lear, aviation equipment maker and inventor, touted his plane as the best-equipped private aircraft with an automatic pilot and advanced navigation gear.
Judge Elliott D Marshall dissolved the temporary injunction against the Rubber Workers union after ruling the June 11 acts at the plant were illegal but warning that any future unlawful acts or threats of violence would prompt a new injunction. He urged union officials to curb violence and for the dispute to be resolved at the bargaining table. The union called the decision a victory while a company official declined to comment.
Alfred Wilson 37 of Leavittsburg killed two sisters in law Hazel Botts and Nancy Worthington and abducted Nancy Worthington. Emmitt Dennison and a 10 year old escaped after Wilson forced their car off a road. A girl’s body was found in a ditch near Windham and a boy survived. Wilson had a prior bond on an assault charge and warned that they would not take him alive.
At Quantico Virginia Defense Secretary Wilson called Senate attempts to boost air force funding phoney amid a defense bill fight. The Senate debates a 34.9 billion defense measure while a 1.16 billion increase for air force is in question. Wilson later said he would cross that bridge if Congress votes the money and defended the B52 as superior to the Bison.
Twenty two members of the James Wood Chapter of the Future Farmers of America will attend the 30th annual convention of the Virginia Association of the FFA at Virginia Polytechnic Institute June 25 to 28. About 1,100 high school students and instructors will attend in Blacksburg. Henry M. Davis is advisor. State contests include dairy crops livestock and poultry with two Frederick County livestock judging teams and a crop judging team. The top teams advance to national events or the Virginia State Fair. James Wood will be represented in farm mechanics and tractor driving. Seven members were invited to join the State FFA Band. two boys were invited as special guests. Accompanying teachers are Mr. Davis James L. Givens and James C. Gordon. The National FFA convention will be in Kansas City next October.
Today’s session at O Sull ivan Rubber Corp failed to bridge gaps as both sides rejected proposals. A new meeting is set for Friday with union push for the May 12 contract terms, full recalls, 7 cent wage raise and six holidays, while the company favors a working basis and warns of delays.
