In Algiers riot police fired into the air to disperse a pro Ben Bella crowd as helmeted troops appeared for the first time since his overthrow. Several demonstrators were arrested while others scattered amid renewed clashes and a restored link with Paris.
Dominican workers protest for three days to back rebels amid OAS peace talks. Rebel demands include a provisional government, timely elections, and armament limits, while the junta backs the OAS plan. Demonstrations also flare in Algiers amid Boumedienne’s coup and Ben Bella’s fate.
A dreary week ends with a return to near normal or slightly below temperatures for the next five days from tomorrow through Saturday. Showers are forecast throughout the period as a Rotary Club barbecue mystery item includes a lost Wittnauer gold watch needing owner contact at 662-0366. The Apple Capital Classic motorcycle race in Winchester on June 9 was slated for national TV but will air later on ABC Wide World of Sports.
President Johnson signs a 4.7 billion excise tax repeal delaying its start to Tuesday. The package cuts auto and telephone taxes gradually through 1969, with refunds to retailers and shoppers. Car buyers recover about 70 dollars on May 15 purchases as duties shrink nationwide.
A 70-year-old Strasburg man Herbert Franklin Bly was killed when struck by a northbound auto driven by Cecil Ray Campbell on U.S. 11 near the Cedar Creek Bridge in Warren County at 11:45 p.m. Other weekend accidents injured six. Bly’s funeral is planned for Wednesday at Stover Funeral Chapel with burial at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. He leaves a daughter and many relatives.
Destructive Arkansas River crest moved toward Larned and Great Bend after engulfing eastern Colorado and western Kansas. Five mile wide floodwaters spread near Dodge City with Kinsley downstream. governor calls it a 100 year flood as helicopters monitor the river valley. Death tolls: 16 in Colorado, two in Kansas.
A spokesman for the British Commonwealth peace mission led by Harold Wilson said the plan remains to visit five capitals including Washington Moscow Peking Hanoi and Saigon. He noted hostility from Red China and North Viet Nam is expected and that official word from capitals will determine if the mission proceeds or is made public as opposition to peace efforts.
American and Vietnamese planes bombed bridges barracks and targets in North Viet Nam. In ground fighting 27 government troops and 20 Viet Cong were killed. A U S Marine died and three were wounded near Da Nang.
In a tense night engagement over North Vietnam four U S Navy Skyraider planes from the Midway and Oriskany faced two MIG17 jets. One MIG was shot down in flames while the other fled toward Hanoi. Pilots described the fight as terrifying and personal with trees and ridges dodged at low altitude.
Vice President Hubert Humphrey returned from Paris saying the talks with President Charles de Gaulle were fruitful and constructive. He planned to report to President Johnson at 8:30 a.m. about a one hour meeting in the Elysee Palace amid strained U.S.-French ties over Vietnam.
Thomas Russell Barr of Harrisonburg was re-elected president at the Northern Virginia Firemen's Association final session. The three day convention drew 14 companies and 12 auxiliaries, with the Reuss Fire Company winning the best looking ladder truck trophy.
