Coal Code Is In Operation Under Guffey-Vinson Act
President Roosevelt ordered into operation today the code of fair practices for the soft coal industry under the Guffey-Vinson act. The Bituminous Coal Commission set a July 12 hearing to decide which intrastate coal would fall under the code due to interstate commerce effects. In Lynchburg Virginia a mother Gladys Thornton age 24 and her 4 year old daughter Judy drowned on the James river near Big Island during a family moonlit boat ride. Sanford Thornton aged 32 saved himself and 7 year old Alice as the boat capsized when all stood to exit. Mrs Thornton's body was recovered quickly and the girl's body found among waterside weeds downstream.
