The Mississippi River rose toward record crests threatening the Hannibal Quincy area as flood waters forced evacuations in Iowa Illinois and Missouri. Work began this morning on resurfacing Route 7 between Berryville and Winchester a seven mile stretch. F M Yellett Virginia highway engineer said project from Berryville western limits to Winchester limits will take about one week to 10 days, weather permitting. Roanoke contractor Sam Finley leads the job using mixed in place bituminous treatment. Traffic may pause briefly but drivers are urged to proceed carefully as tar is applied and covered quickly. A similar treatment was completed on Route 50 west between Winchester and Hogue Creek. Roads in Clarke County and adjacent areas are reported as generally in good condition.
