Bridge collapse kills three workers near Frederick Junction
A 100-foot span of the Monocacy river bridge at Frederick Junction collapsed trapping and killing three iron welders instantly. Six others were hospitalized with severe injuries while two more workers were missing. Names of the deceased include James Gue and Edgar Lang. authorities consider vibrations from a stone truck prior to the fall as a possible cause. Rescuers continued efforts as crews inspected the wreckage and searched for the missing.

Policeman Fatally Shot in Malt Shop Bandit Duel
New York patrolman Patrick Mitchell was killed in a gunfight with bandit George Harris 30, who held up a malt and hop store near Amsterdam and One Hundred Twelfth Street. Harris, who misidentified himself, fired first. Mitchell was mortally wounded. The bandit was wounded in a taxi stand pursuit after the store theft of seven dollars.
